Impressions

During my recent vacation in Split, I was immersed in a city that beautifully merges ancient history with vibrant modern life. The heart of Split is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Diocletian's Palace, which provides a captivating backdrop for exploration. One of the architectural marvels that stands proudly within this historic complex is the Cathedral of Saint Domnius. At just a short 0.5 km walk from my accommodation, this cathedral is not only a significant religious site but also a stunning example of early medieval architecture. Ascending its bell tower rewarded me with breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking to appreciate the city's historical depth.

Just a stone's throw away, the charming streets of Old Split beckoned me to wander through cobblestone alleys, where local artisans and cafés brought the vibrant culture of the city to life. Nearby, the Jaman Art Centre showcased contemporary Croatian art, while the Live Museum Split offered a quirky and interactive journey through history. I couldn't resist a visit to Froggyland, a unique museum dedicated to taxidermy frogs, which provided a delightful and unusual experience. This eclectic mix of attractions highlighted the artistic and whimsical spirit of Split, making it clear that this city honors its past while embracing creativity.

The city's rich tapestry of landmarks continued to unfold within a half-kilometer radius, with sites like the Church of Saint Martin and the Temple of Jupiter, which were steeped in historical significance. The church and monastery of St. Frane offered a tranquil escape, while the Split City Museum allowed me to dive deeper into the local history and heritage. These experiences underscored Split's status as a crossroads of time, where ancient monuments stand alongside contemporary endeavours, creating a dynamic environment that draws visitors in with both its history and its modern flair.
