Impressions
During my recent vacation in Split, Croatia, I was captivated by the charming blend of rich history and vibrant modern life that permeated the city. My exploration began in Old Split, just a half-kilometer from my accommodation. As I wandered through the cobblestone streets, I marveled at the well-preserved Roman architecture, with its ancient stone walls telling stories of centuries past. This area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a delight for history enthusiasts, showcasing the stunning remains of Diocletian’s Palace, where the hustle and bustle of local life coexists with historical landmarks.
Just a short stroll from Old Split lies the majestic Cathedral of Saint Domnius, one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals still in use today. Towering over the city, its bell tower offers panoramic views that are not to be missed. Nearby, the Live Museum Split provides an engaging experience that brings history to life through interactive exhibits and performances. I also visited the serene Church and Monastery of St. Frane, located close by, where the tranquil atmosphere provided a perfect reprieve from the vibrancy of the city. The stunning architecture and peaceful cloisters are a reminder of Split’s monastic heritage and made for a reflective pause in my busy sightseeing schedule.
On the cultural side, the Jaman Art Centre showcased contemporary Croatian art, while Froggyland offered a whimsical journey through a world of taxidermy frogs in entertaining dioramas, much to my amusement. The Riva, Split's vibrant waterfront promenade, became my favorite spot to unwind and absorb the atmosphere over a cup of coffee, facing the Adriatic Sea. The Church of Saint Martin, a hidden gem just a short walk away, added to the historical tapestry of the city, blending seamlessly with the modern shops and eateries that line the pedestrian-friendly streets. My time in Split was a delightful mix of exploration, relaxation, and cultural enrichment, leaving me with lasting memories of this enchanting coastal city.
