Impressions

During my delightful vacation in Split, I found myself captivated by the city’s rich history and vibrant culture, all centered around its iconic landmarks. Just a stone's throw from my accommodation, I explored the famous Gregory of Nin, a statue that pays homage to a revered bishop known for his role in the promotion of the Croatian language. Standing proudly near the entrance of Diocletian's Palace, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world, I was enthralled by the combination of ancient Roman architecture and bustling modern life. The palace, built in the 4th century, offers a labyrinth of marble streets, galleries, and shops that invite visitors to wander through history.

Equally mesmerizing is the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, located within Diocletian's Palace. Originally built as a mausoleum for the emperor, today it serves as the focal point of Split’s religious life and showcases stunning Romanesque architecture. Just around the corner, the Temple of Jupiter, dedicated to the Roman god, stands as a serene reminder of the city’s ancient roots. For those seeking a more whimsical experience, Froggyland, featuring an unusual collection of taxidermy frogs in various human-like scenarios, is a quirky stop that delights visitors with its eccentricity.

Close to these cultural gems, Republic Square buzzes with local life, offering cafes and shops where I could relax and soak in the atmosphere, all while savoring the local cuisine. A short walk from here led me to the Riva, Split’s vibrant waterfront promenade, where I was treated to stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding islands. My visit to the Croatian Maritime Museum provided a fascinating glimpse into the city’s nautical history, with exhibits detailing Split’s maritime heritage. Meanwhile, the Church and Monastery of St. Frane offered a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle, combining tranquility with the beauty of its surrounding gardens. Splendid days spent in this coastal jewel were filled with enriching experiences and unforgettable moments amidst its historic landmarks.
