Impressions

During my vacation in Split, I was entranced by the city's vibrant history and stunning landmarks, all conveniently located within a short distance from each other. One of the highlights of my visit was strolling through Old Split, where I experienced the essence of the city's rich heritage. This historic core is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its cobbled streets and ancient architecture telling stories of centuries gone by. Just a stone's throw away, I visited the impressive Diocletian’s Palace, an architectural marvel built in the 4th century, which now houses a blend of modern shops, cafes, and homes intermingled with ancient ruins.

Without a doubt, one of the most striking monuments I encountered was the statue of Gregory of Nin, a 10th-century bishop renowned for his contributions to the Croatian language. Located merely 300 meters from my accommodation, this bronze statue is not only a significant landmark but also a popular spot for visitors who rub its toe for good luck. Nearby, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, with its stunning bell tower, captivated me with its intricate Romanesque designs. Carved from the original Diocletian's mausoleum, this cathedral stands as the heart of Split, and climbing its tower offered me breathtaking views of the city and the Adriatic Sea.

Exploring further, I discovered the Church of Saint Martin and the charming Church and Monastery of St. Frane, both nestled within walking distance from the main attractions. Each offered a glimpse into the spiritual life of the past while showcasing remarkable architecture. I also visited the Ethnographic Museum and the Croatian Maritime Museum, both located near the Split Port, where I could admire the deep connection the city has with the sea. My experience would not have been complete without a stop at the Live Museum Split, where I learned about local history in a fun and interactive way. Overall, my time in Split was an enriching blend of culture, history, and stunning scenery, all easily accessible and ripe for exploration.
